DESCRIPTION:Create a Moorland with recycled fabrics using straight stitch and free machine embroidery. \nJustine will teach you the skills and techniques you can use to create your own unique moorland. You may not finish your moorland during the session but you will have learnt the skills to finish it in your own time. \nRecycled fabrics will be provided for you to use but feel free to bring your own. \nWhat do you need to bring? \nYour sewing machine which must have a free machine embroidery foot \nThread \nAny recycled fabrics you wish to use (optional) \nPrevious experience required  \nYou will need to be familiar with your machine and how to use it’s basic features such as winding and inserting the bobbin\, threading up your machine and needle\, changing the feet and needle and sewing a straight stitch. This session is not suitable for complete sewing machine beginners. \nAbout our tutor \nJustine is a mixed media and textile artist based in the Howardian Hills. She uses recycled fabrics and found objects to create landscape work based predominantly in the North of England. She works from her own studio/gallery and delivers a wide range of workshops. Justine was a selected artist to take part in Landscape Artist of the Year 2022 and is represented by The Biscuit Factory\, Newcastle.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Free Machine Embroidery
DESCRIPTION:Join Justine to learn how to do free machine embroidery and create your own unique artwork. \nJustine will talk you through how to set up your machine to safely and correctly do free machine embroidery. You will then complete a series of basic tasks to get you used to and confident on how your machine will work. \nYou will then use recycled fabrics\, bondaweb and interfacing to create applique images onto a calico background. \nThe final artwork will be based on the theme of “floral” images where you will create a bouquet within a vase. You will be guided through the whole process to create a beautiful piece of art you can hang on your wall. It is a fun way to expand your creative textile practice and these skills will inspire you to do more once you leave! \nWhat do you need to bring? \nYour sewing machine which must have a free machine embroidery foot. Please can we ask everyone to test this prior to attending the workshop. \nThread\, a dark colour works best\, for example navy blue. \nFabric scissors\, paper scissors\, pen\, pencil and a 30cm ruler (optional\, you are welcome to borrow ours) \nFeel free to bring your own ‘stash’ of fabrics which you feel may be suitable for your piece. This is optional but some people like to bring a keepsake or treasured fabric to incorporate into the work (optional) \nPrevious experience required  \nYou will need to be familiar with your machine and how to use it’s basic features such as winding and inserting the bobbin\, threading up your machine and needle\, changing the feet and needle and sewing a straight stitch. This session is not suitable for complete sewing machine beginners however\, you do not need to have any experience of free machine embroidery. \nAbout our tutor \nI am a mixed media and textile artist living in the Howardian Hills where I take much of my inspiration as well as the North of England. I work mainly in recycled fabrics and love to depict the local landscapes\, seascapes and woodlands. I see the landscape in patterns and use this to add perspective to my work as well as layering and blending techniques. \nI exhibit and teach in a number of locations and took part in Landscape Artist of the Year 2022 on Sky Arts.

SUMMARY:Sewing School: Buttonhole Skills Session
DESCRIPTION:This session is all about buttonholes. Gill will share her hints and tips on buttonholes\, including how to prepare your buttonhole before sewing\, techniques for buttonhole placement\, using an automatic button function\, using a stepped buttonhole function\, sewing a buttonhole without any automation. By the end of the session you will: \n\nHave sewn a buttonhole using an automatic buttonhole function (if your machine is compatible)\nHave sewn a buttonhole using a stepped buttonhole function (if your machine is compatible)\nHave sewn a buttonhole without any automation\nLearnt techniques for preparing your buttonhole before sewing it\, to avoid problems\nSewn at least two buttonholes that are lined up\nUnderstand the key principles of button placement\n\nRequired sewing knowledge and experience \nA good basic knowledge of a sewing machine and be able to sew a straight stitch. Attendees need to be familiar with loading a bobbin\, changing a needle and changing the foot on their sewing machine. \nThis session is not suitable for absolute beginners that haven’t got experience of using a sewing machine or sewing fabric together. \nFabric and tool requirements \nPlease bring your own sewing machine and supplies with you. You will need to have a buttonhole foot\, buttonhole stabiliser plates\, two colours of thread – a contrasting colour to be used in the bobbin and marking tools (preferably a heat erasable pen). \nEverything else you will need will be provided for the workshop.

SUMMARY:Sewing School: Making a dress with French seams
DESCRIPTION:Please note this is a two part workshop. Part 1 will take place on Saturday 11th May 1:30-4pm and part 2 Saturday 8th June 10:30-3:30pm. Payment covers both sessions. \nPart 1 Saturday 11th May 1:30-4pm \nThe pattern we will be using is the Sew Different Triple tuck smock dress. Please click here to view the pattern. \n\n\nIn this session we will accurately take our body measurements to determine what size or sizes we will need to use with the pattern. We will then prepare our pattern and cut out our fabric\, transferring all pattern markings and finishing the raw edges with an overlocker. This means we will be ready to sew our dress in the next session. \n\n\nSize range: approximately UK 8-26 – please use your body measurements compared to the sizing on the pattern\, do not use your ready to wear size to estimate the size needed on the pattern as they can vary significantly. \n\nMinor fitting issues such as grading between a couple of sizes\, or lengthening/shortening can be dealt with\, but fitting issue requiring more complex adjustments will not be possible in the time constraints of this session. If you typically experience fitting issues with ready to wear garments\, you should expect that you will need to adjust dressmaking patterns and the adjustments very much depend on the specific fitting issue. \n\n\nPart 2 Saturday 8th June 10:30-3:30pm \n\n\n\nIn this session we will sew our using French seams. \n\n\nMinor fitting issues such as grading between a couple of sizes\, or lengthening/shortening can be dealt with\, but fitting issue requiring more complex adjustments will not be possible in the time constraints of this session. SUMMARY:Create a Seascape using Recycled Fabrics
DESCRIPTION:You will learn new skills to help create a seascape using recycled fabrics. \nThroughout the day you will be introduced to blending and layering techniques to build up the seascape based on a given image to work from. You will be guided through each step with a range of demos\, individual practical work and personal feedback. We will discuss use of pattern to add perspective and composition to draw the eye into the artwork. \nAt the end of the day you will have a finished or near finished piece to take home where you can embellish and add those finishing touches. We will also discuss how to embellish and how to present you work to hang on the wall. \nWhat do you need to bring? \nYour sewing machine which must have a free machine embroidery foot. Please can we ask everyone to test this prior to attending the workshop. \nThread in ‘seascape’ colours \nFabric scissors\, pen\, pencil and a 30cm ruler (optional\, you are welcome to borrow ours) \nFeel free to bring your own ‘stash’ of fabrics which you feel may be suitable for your piece. This is optional but some people like to bring a keepsake or treasured fabric to incorporate into the work (optional) \nPrevious experience required  \nYou will need to be familiar with your machine and how to use it’s basic features such as winding and inserting the bobbin\, threading up your machine and needle\, changing the feet and needle and sewing a straight stitch. This session is not suitable for complete sewing machine beginners however\, you do not need to have any experience of free machine embroidery. \nAbout our tutor \nI am a mixed media and textile artist living in the Howardian Hills where I take much of my inspiration as well as the North of England. I work mainly in recycled fabrics and love to depict the local landscapes\, seascapes and woodlands. I see the landscape in patterns and use this to add perspective to my work as well as layering and blending techniques. \nI exhibit and teach in a number of locations and took part in Landscape Artist of the Year 2022 on Sky Arts.

SUMMARY:Sewing School: Making trousers with an elasticated waist in the back
DESCRIPTION:Please note this is a two part workshop. Part 1 will take place on Saturday 9th March 1:30-4pm and part 2 Saturday 13th April 10:30-3:30pm. Payment covers both sessions. \nPart 1 Saturday 9th March 1:30-4pm \nThe pattern we will be using is The Closet Core Pietra. Please click here to view the pattern. The pdf pattern comes in 2 size options. Please let us know which size you would like when booking. \n\nIn this session we will accurately take our body measurements to determine what size or sizes we will need to use with the dressmaking pattern. We will then prepare our pattern and cut out our fabric\, transferring all pattern markings and finishing the raw edges with an overlocker. This means we will be ready to sew our trousers in the next session. \n\n\nThe size range is approximately UK 6-30 please use your body measurements compared to the sizing on the pattern\, do not use your ready to wear size to estimate the size needed on the pattern as they can vary significantly. \nMinor fitting issues such as grading between a couple of sizes\, or lengthening/shortening can be dealt with\, but fitting issue requiring more complex adjustments will not be possible in the time constraints of this session. If you typically experience fitting issues with ready to wear garments\, you should expect that you will need to adjust dressmaking patterns and the adjustments very much depend on the specific fitting issue. \nPart 2 Saturday 13th April 10:30-3:30pm \n\n\nIn this session we make our trousers with an elasticated waist in the back.
