DESCRIPTION:This is a 6 week workshop\, with one session each week. If you cannot attend them all\, please let us know and we will try and accommodate you as much as possible! \nWelcome to our first Beginners Quilting workshop with Helene. If you have looked at beautiful quilts and thought how lovely it would be if you could make them too then this is your chance to learn. Helene will slowly guide you through all aspects of quilting\, from choosing colours and patterns to binding and finishing your quilt off. This is not a learning to quilt race\, it is a relaxed quilting stroll! You even get a free “Space to Craft’ session at Bugweed’s for 6 hours\, usually costing £14 which means you can come and spend time consolidating your learning and take some will earned ‘me time’! \nI wish I could quilt! \nEach week there will be different a focus for learning and slowly but surely your quilt\, skills and confidence will bloom! \nWeek 1 \nFabric choices\, layout of colours\, piecing squares in pairs and then into a block of 4. \nWeek 2 \nOrganising blocks and sewing blocks together. \nWeek 3 \nAdding borders\, choosing a backing fabric and basting with 505 spray. \nWeek 4 \nQuilting using straight lines 1/4in from the ditch or diagonal lines. \nWeek 5 \nMake and attach the binding. \nWeek 6 \nHand sew the binding down\, finish off your quilt and even have chance to make a label for it! \nWhat do you need to bring? \n\nSewing machine\nEnthusiasm\nA notebook and pen\n\nWhat is included? \n\n5 fat quarters of quilting cotton\nbatting (wadding) for your quilt\nthread\none free ‘Space to Craft’ day at Bugweed’s usually costing £14\n10% off all purchases in the shop for your quilt\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners to quilting. You will need to be familiar with your machine and how to use it’s basic features such as winding and inserting the bobbin\, threading up your machine and needle\, changing the feet and needle and sewing a straight stitch. This session is not suitable for complete sewing machine beginners however\, you do not need to have any experience of quilting. \nAbout our tutor \nHelene is not only an all round fabulous person but also a fabulous quilter! She has many years of teaching little people in school and so has the patience of a saint\, which makes teaching quilting to us adults a breeze! Helene loves quilting with a passion and can be found at her beloved Bernina sewing machine on an evening and weekend. She is part of the Yorkshire Modern Quilters group and enjoys experimenting with colour and pattern in her quilts\, bags and other hand made items. Helene is very understanding of people’s individual needs and ways of learning so if you have any worries\, concerns or questions about the workshops please just ask.

DESCRIPTION:This month Helen will guide you through piecing a beautiful Double Wedding Ring block. Use up some of your scrap stash or treat yourself to some fat quarters and a contrasting plain to create a stunning block! \nPlease note this is will be repeated on the October BOTM. Please refrain from attending both sessions\, thank you! \nWhat do you need to bring? \n\nTemplate for Double Wedding Ring (please ask for more details if needed)\nFabric scraps at least 3″ square for pieced rings\nFat quarter of contrasting fabric if doing plain rings rather than pieced rings\n0.5m background fabric\nThread\n28mm rotary cutter\n1/4” foot or capability to move needle on your machine to 1/4” (ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY)\nfabric marking pen\n\nA nice to have- \n\nRotating cutting mat – can be ordered from Bugweed’s in advance!\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience \nThis workshop is suitable for intermediate quilters. You will need to be familiar with your machine and how to use it’s features such as winding and inserting the bobbin\, threading up your machine and needle\, changing the feet and needle and sewing a straight stitch. This session is not suitable for complete sewing machine beginners. You must have a 1/4″ foot or the ability to move your needle to the 1/4″ seam allowance. DESCRIPTION:Our summer holiday workshops are all about creativity through textiles and media and are aimed at children and adults developing their skills in a range of areas and more importantly a chance to create and develop a love of being free to create. \nJoin Helene on this child (8+)  and adult workshop to create a fabulous fabric house and garden scene presented in an embroidery hoop. You will both learn simple methods of appliqué using either a machine or hand sewing. Helene will also help you get to grips with fussy cutting fabric to make your textile art truly personalised. \nThere is no need to worry about experience\, this is suitable for beginners to experts! Come along and enjoy using fabric scraps to make something beautiful\, it’s a great way to recycle fabric in to something lovely! \nAll materials and hoop are included in the cost and there will be a short break in the workshop with refreshments. \nWe are a neurodivergent friendly studio and understand that some people need more breaks than others. If you or your child requires any workshop adjustments please get in touch and let us know. SUMMARY:Embracing Creativity: Mini Portrait Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The first of its kind at Bugweed’s! A 2 day Portrait Workshop with an artist! \nWe are delighted to bring you a 2 day workshop where you can really develop your creative techniques with Richard from Jonaluisrejo Art (check out his amazing work on Instagram!!). \nAbout the tutor \nRichard has always had a love of creativity\, whether it be through art\, music or maths! Although his main career for 30 years has been in education as a teacher and then an advisor\, he has always enjoyed using his skills to paint and sculpt with natural materials often sourced by himself. He understands the need for connection between people and their environment and is a keen outdoorsman and horticulturalist. Richard can often be found in his handmade cabin on his allotment in the north east; painting on homemade canvases\, crafting and sculpting with foraged materials. He is a firm believer in a growth mindset; that all people have incredible untapped potential and skills that can be encouraged and developed. This 2 day workshop gives him the opportunity to share his skills with the Bugweed’s community and also learn from us too! \nAbout the workshop \nOver the two full days\, you will learn about how to become more connected with your artwork\, develop techniques and skills in drawing\, sketching\, painting and collage and be confident in creating your own portrait of a loved one (pet or person) to take away. \nRichard will help each attendee hand-make a canvas using recycled wood and Bugweed’s calico. Throughout the process\, he will guide you in artists techniques to help with expression and form and slowly begin to transfer your photo into a work of art. \nDay 1 \nEnjoy meeting the tutor and seeing some of his work. Grow your confidence as an artist and as a creative by thinking freely about the artistic process\, understand the importance of flow and movement in painting and begin to transpose this in to your artwork. By the end of the day you will have made your canvas and mapped out your portrait on a background that you have painted. Richard will also teach you some fun techniques to confidently overcome the daunting ‘blank canvas’! \nDay 2 \nDuring Day 2 you will learn how to use layers of materials\, either paint or collage to create colour and formvto represent your muse. Richard will help you improve your knowledge of techniques and will give you tips to enhance your skills. Both days are all about developing your enthusiasm\, creativity\, confidence and skills within painting and drawing. Get lost in your work and enjoy having space and time for yourself. With Richard’s gentle tuition and encouragement when you want or need it. \nAll materials are included in the cost of the workshop. This is a once in a summer experience and not one to be missed! \nYou will need to bring \n\na photograph of your portrait muse (preferably also printed on to an A4 sheet of paper)\nyour lunch\nyour creativity!\n\nYou will  \n\ndevelop confidence in your creativity\nlearn new artistic skills\nenjoy spending time with like minded people\ngain confidence in your artistic skills\nlearn how to make your own canvas\n\nThis workshop is aimed at all creatives aged 16 and over who are looking to enhance their skills in art. SUMMARY:Make Your Own Quilted Jacket
DESCRIPTION:Please note this is a two part workshop. \nPart 1 Saturday 9th August 10.00am – 4.00pm \nPart 2 Saturday 16th August 10.00am – 4.00pm \nOne payment covers both sessions. Materials are NOT included. There is a 10% discount on all fabrics purchased for the workshop by attendees. \nDay 1 Saturday 9th August 10.00am – 4.00pm \nThe first session of this two day workshop will be focused on making the pattern for your quilted jacket and then piecing your patchwork together. Graham will guide you through the process of using your oversized sweatshirt to create a paper pattern which will then be used on the second day. You will also make up your quilt top using your own material which you have chosen prior to the day. \nBetween the two days you will need to quilt your top\, batting and lining together. Graham is kindly offering his services at a reduced rate of £35 to quilt your fabric ready for Day 2. If you are happy to quilt it yourself that is also great but will need to be quilted by Day 2. \n\nDay 2 Saturday 16th August 10.00am – 4.oopm \n\n\n\nIn this session you will be using your paper pattern to cut out and then construct your quilted jacket. Graham will help you construct the jacket and will be on hand to provide hints and tips for the tricky bits! An overlocker will be available for those who would like to overlock seams. You will hopefully leave with your quilted jacket finished or very nearly complete! \n\n\n\n\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience for both sessions\n\n\n\nYou will need to have experience making simple quilt tops prior to the workshop and understand how to use your sewing machine. This is not a beginners class and is ideally for those quilters who would like to construct a garment. \nWhat will you need to bring for both sessions? \n\n\n\nyour sewing machine\na layer cake or the equivalent of 2.5m of fabric for the patchwork\n1m suitable batting ie a thin\, breathable natural fibre such as cotton or bamboo\nlining fabric (this can be purchased after Day 1)\na sweatshirt one size bigger than usually worn\nmatching thread\n\n\nMachines are available to hire so please let us know if you would like to use one of our machines.

This whole project will be hand sewn so no machine needed and no experience needed! We encourage children of any age from 8+ to come along with their adult. You can either both sew one or work on the same one! \nIf you are a beginner to sewing\, whether adult or child\, Debbie will guide you through this project and demonstrate some simple stitches along the way. You will leave with a beautifully completed ladybird broach with enough fabric in your goody bag to go home and make another one! Yes! Well this workshop is definitely for you! \nDebbie will lead you through the process from your photo printed on Rico Creative Fabric to embellishing it with collage\, embroidery and other such techniques. This is your chance to make something really fun to cherish or even give as a gift to a loved one. \nAll materials are included in the cost of the workshop – the Creative Paper is £5 per sheet and is also included! Bring your sewing machine if you would like to use some of the stitches that your machine provides. \nYou will need to send us your photo which we can then prepare for printing. SUMMARY:Bloom Together - Embroidery in 3d
DESCRIPTION:Our summer holiday workshops are all about creativity through textiles and media and are aimed at children and adults developing their skills in a range of areas and more importantly a chance to create and develop a love of being free to create. \nJoin Debbie on this teen (12+) or adult workshop to create 3d flora and forna sculptures using embroidery and solufleece. Solufleece is a wash-away interfacing used create a structure on which to decorate. Once rinsed\, only the decoration is left and the interfacing has disappeared! This is often used in textiles art and is a great way to bring your sewing ideas into the 3d world! \nThis workshop will be a sewing machine based session. Machines can be provided but we encourage you to bring your own – it’s a great way to learn on them! \nWhat will I need to bring? \n\nsewing machine that you can drop the feed-dogs on (Please get in touch if you need help with this!)\nan open toe embroidery foot/ free motion embroidery foot\ncreativity and enthusiasm!\n\nAll materials are included in the price! There will be a short break in the workshop with refreshments. \nWe are a neurodivergent friendly studio and understand that some people need more breaks than others. If you or your teen requires workshop adjustments please get in touch and let us know. We are more than happy to accommodate a range of needs. \nPlease note\, this workshop is for individuals over 12 years old. We also welcome teens who would prefer to have their adult with them. Only book a place for those who are creating sculptures.

This useful fabric is a lightweight\, sheer cotton which holds its shape well making it perfect for textile sculpture. \nAdd decoration using haberdashery such as ribbons and beads and let your creativity loose on trimmings to make your jellyfish really stand out! \nAll materials are included in the price so just come with your enthusiasm! There will be a short break in the workshop with refreshments. \nWe are a neurodivergent friendly studio and understand that some people need more breaks than others. If you or your child requires workshop adjustments please get in touch and let us know. We are more than happy to accommodate a range of needs. \nPlease note\, this workshop is for children over 8 years old. We welcome up to 2 children with each adult.  \nPlease book the same amount of tickets as jellyfish that are to be made ie an adult and a child each making a jellyfish will book 2 tickets\, a child making a jellyfish with their adult accompanying them for support will book 1 ticket.

There are 5 spaces for morning and afternoon to make sure you get lots of table space. \nPlease note\, there is no tutoring with this session. Our staff will be busy in the shop and although we are always happy to help our community\, we will only be able to answer quick questions and make sure you have a cuppa!
