SUMMARY:I wish I could quilt! Beginners Quilting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is a 5 week workshop\, with one session each week. If you cannot attend them all\, please let us know and we will try and accommodate you as much as possible! \nWelcome to our Beginners Quilting workshop with Helene. If you have looked at beautiful quilts and thought how lovely it would be if you could make them too then this is your chance to learn. Helene will slowly guide you through all aspects of quilting\, from choosing colours and patterns to binding and finishing your quilt off. This is not a learning to quilt race\, it is a relaxed quilting stroll! You even get a free “Space to Craft’ session at Bugweed’s for 6 hours\, usually costing £14 which means you can come and spend time consolidating your learning and take some will earned ‘me time’! \nI wish I could quilt! \nThis course has previously run over 6 weeks\, but we’ve now condensed it into 5 sessions while extending some of the class times. This means you’ll still receive the same amount of teaching time overall. \nEach week there will be different a focus for learning and slowly but surely your quilt\, skills and confidence will bloom! \nWeek 1     10.30am – 1.30pm \nFabric choices\, layout of colours\, piecing squares in pairs and then rows. \nWeek 2    10.30am – 12.30pm \nOrganising your rows and sewing them together to create your quilt top. Begin thinking about binding choices\, make binding. \nWeek 3     10.30am – 12.30pm \nAdding borders\, choosing a backing fabric and basting your quilt layers with 505 spray. \nWeek 4     10.30am – 12.30pm \nQuilting using straight lines 1/4in from the ditch or diagonal lines. \nWeek 5       10.30am – 1.30pm \nHand sewing the binding down\, finishing your quilt\, and even having time to add a personalised label. \nWhat do you need to bring? \n\nSewing machine\nEnthusiasm\nA notebook and pen\n\nWhat is included? \n\n5 fat quarters of quilting cotton\nbatting (wadding) for your quilt\nthread\none free ‘Space to Craft’ day at Bugweed’s usually costing £14\n10% off all purchases in the shop for your quilt\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners to quilting. You will need to be familiar with your machine and how to use it’s basic features such as winding and inserting the bobbin\, threading up your machine and needle\, changing the feet and needle and sewing a straight stitch. This session is not suitable for complete sewing machine beginners however\, you do not need to have any experience of quilting. \nAbout our tutor \nHelene is not only an all round fabulous person but also a fabulous quilter! She has many years of teaching little people in school and so has the patience of a saint\, which makes teaching quilting to us adults a breeze! Helene loves quilting with a passion and can be found at her beloved Bernina sewing machine on an evening and weekend. She is part of the Yorkshire Modern Quilters group and enjoys experimenting with colour and pattern in her quilts\, bags and other hand made items. Helene is very understanding of people’s individual needs and ways of learning so if you have any worries\, concerns or questions about the workshops please just ask.

It’s time to get knitting mastered with our carefully designed series of 12 workshops to help you learn all the skills you will need to be a successful confident knitter. \nEmma and Sue\, our tutors with oceans of knowledge\, are ready to guide you through every stage from casting on to working in 3d. Come and learn essential skills and techniques for different knitting projects and make some items on the way! \nDon’t rush to learn and fail\, come and take your time; ask questions and practice your skills. \nEach month there will be different a focus for learning and slowly but surely your knitting sills and confidence will bloom! \nApril \nHand-Warmers – Part 1 of 2\nJoin us for a relaxed and friendly session exploring a range of beautiful yarns and discovering how each one feels to knit. You’ll have the chance to try four ply\, double knit\, and chunky yarns before choosing your favourite for your project. \nWe’ll learn how to create ribbing using knit and purl stitches\, then begin making your very own hand-warmers. There will be a selection of patterns to choose from\, including simple stocking stitch designs\, with an optional cable pattern for anyone feeling adventurous and ready to try something new. \nMay \nHand-Warmers – Part 2 of 2\nIn our second session\, we’ll continue working on your hand-warmers\, learning how to shape for thumbs to give them a comfortable\, snug fit. You’ll also be guided through mattress stitch\, a clever technique that allows you to sew your pieces together neatly and almost invisibly — giving your finished hand-warmers a beautiful\, professional touch. \nCome along\, build your skills\, and enjoy creating something cosy and handmade! \nWhat do you need to bring? \n\nEnthusiasm\nA notebook and pen\nGlasses if you need them!\n\nWhat is included? \n\nStraight knitting needles\nacrylic yarn\nall patterns required\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience \nThis workshop is suitable for complete beginners to knitting. \nAbout our tutor \nEmma and Sue are both members of the Bugweed’s team and have much experience in knitting. They both enjoy knitting a wide variety of projects using different yarns.  Emma loves to knit and crochet shawls and Sue can often be found knitting up a jumper for her grandchildren! They are kind\, caring and patient\, making them the perfect tutors for our very beginners knitting club!

We are so excited to bring you the second instalment of our beginners sock-knitting course where you will have chance to further develop your skills and master using circular needles. \nSocks can look intimidating with all those needles so this time we are tackling the magic loop technique so you don’t need to constantly struggle with all those DPNs. \nJoin us for a relaxed\, supportive 3 week sock-knitting course designed for sock beginners\, rusty knitters and anyone who’s ever felt stuck with those double-pointed needles\, magic loop or turning heels. Running every other Saturday\, this course breaks down the process into clear manageable steps so you can build confidence\, learn essential techniques and finish with a beautiful handmade sock! \nDon’t rush to learn and fail\, come and take your time; ask questions and practice your skills. \nAcross the three sessions\, you’ll learn everything from a stretchy cast-on and turning heels to shaping the toe\, with plenty of guidance\, demonstrations\, and time to practice in a friendly environment with lots of tea and biscuits! \nWeek 1  \nLearn how to cast on for a toe up sock on long circular needles using a magic loop. Knit the toe and start to knit the foot of the sock. Get comfortable using the magic loop technique and other sock knitting treats! \nWeek 2 \nStep-by-step guidance to knit the gusset. Learn how to turn the heel and make a short row heel. Begin to knit the leg of the sock. \nWeek 3 \nKnit the cuff and learn how to to finish off the sock using a stretch cast-off. Recap and start on the second sock\, get some extra tips\, tricks and troubleshooting! \nWhat do you need to bring? \n\nEnthusiasm\nA notebook and pen\nGlasses if you need them!\nYour choice of any 4ply sock knitting yarn (Remember you can buy them in store!)\n\nWhat is included? \n\na set of 2.5mm 60cm Zing fixed Circular needles\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience \nThis workshop is suitable for improving beginners to knitting. \nAbout our tutor \nEleanor has been part of our team for a couple of years and is a super all round crafter! Knitting is one of her many textile passions and she confidently tackles a whole range of tricky knitting patterns. She is studying pattern design at University and is looking forward to a career in the fashion industry. Eleanor is patient with all learners and is highly skilled at explaining tricky techniques.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Helen’s very own ‘Smudge Block’ ! This one is very much tailored to our wonderful quilters at Bugweed’s as Helen has listened to your cries of frustration with half square triangles (HSTs) and has designed a block to help you master them. \nLearn how to square up the blocks and how to efficiently make the HSTs without stitching along the bias edges. No more struggling to know what to do with HSTs and no more struggling to get them the same size\, Helen is here to save the day! \nOnce you have mastered the basic block and techniques related to HSTs\, go wild and repeat it to make a whole quilt! \nThis workshop is repeated in April so please DO NOT book on to both\, places are limited! \nOur Block Of The Month\, BOTM\, sessions are full of support and friendship and we welcome both newcomers and regulars. This is the only time this workshop will run this year. \nWhat do you need to bring? \n\nFat quarters of contrasting fabrics (Please use 100% cotton as the finish is much better than a poly cotton)\nSolid colour background fabrics\nFabric marking pen\nmatching thread\nrotary cutter\nRotating cutting mat (not essential but useful – can be preordered from Bugweed’s)\nSmall squaring ruler (not essential but useful)\n1/4” foot or capability to move needle on your machine to 1/4” (ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY)\n\nWhat is included? \n\nrefreshments (please bring your own lunch)\ntutoring\nfriendship!\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience \nThis workshop is suitable for improving beginners to quilting.
