SUMMARY:Sewing School: Making a dress with French seams
DESCRIPTION:Please note this is a two part workshop. Part 1 will take place on Saturday 11th May 1:30-4pm and part 2 Saturday 8th June 10:30-3:30pm. Payment covers both sessions. \nPart 1 Saturday 11th May 1:30-4pm \nThe pattern we will be using is the Sew Different Triple tuck smock dress. Please click here to view the pattern. \n\n\nIn this session we will accurately take our body measurements to determine what size or sizes we will need to use with the pattern. We will then prepare our pattern and cut out our fabric\, transferring all pattern markings and finishing the raw edges with an overlocker. This means we will be ready to sew our dress in the next session. \n\n\nSize range: approximately UK 8-26 – please use your body measurements compared to the sizing on the pattern\, do not use your ready to wear size to estimate the size needed on the pattern as they can vary significantly. \n\nMinor fitting issues such as grading between a couple of sizes\, or lengthening/shortening can be dealt with\, but fitting issue requiring more complex adjustments will not be possible in the time constraints of this session. If you typically experience fitting issues with ready to wear garments\, you should expect that you will need to adjust dressmaking patterns and the adjustments very much depend on the specific fitting issue. \n\n\nPart 2 Saturday 8th June 10:30-3:30pm \n\n\n\nIn this session we will sew our using French seams. \n\n\nMinor fitting issues such as grading between a couple of sizes\, or lengthening/shortening can be dealt with\, but fitting issue requiring more complex adjustments will not be possible in the time constraints of this session. If you typically experience fitting issues with ready to wear garments\, you should expect that you will need to adjust dressmaking patterns and the adjustments very much depend on the specific fitting issue. \n\n\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience for both sessions \nYou need to have good basic knowledge of a sewing machine and be able to sew a straight stitch. You will need to be familiar with your machine and how to use it’s basic features such as winding and inserting the bobbin\, threading up your machine and needle\, changing the feet and needle and sewing a straight stitch. This session is not suitable for complete sewing machine beginners. \nYou also need a basic understanding of using a garment pattern. This session is not suitable for absolute beginners that haven’t got experience of using a sewing machine or making clothes using garment patterns. \nWhat will you need to bring for both sessions? \n\nYour sewing machine and instruction book\nThread\nIron on interfacing (0.5 m)\nFabric (see below for measurements and suggestions of fabric types)\n\nSuggested fabrics:  \n\nSuggested fabrics: Cotton\, linen\, viscose – only use viscose if you are a confident sewer and have used it several times before. \n\n\nFabric requirements:  \n\n\n\n150 cm (60″) wide fabric: Sizes 8 – 18\, 1.75 m (2 yd) // Sizes 20 – 26\, 2.5 m (2.75 yd). \n\n\n112 cm (45″) wide fabric: Sizes 8 – 18\, 2.5 m (2.75 yd) // Sizes 20 – 26\, 3 m (3.25 yd). \n\nIf you need to purchase any supplies for this workshop contact our sister company Bugweed’s Fabrics. All purchases need to be done before the workshop to allow the workshop to start on time.

DESCRIPTION:This month Helen will show you how to create the French braid. \nThis is a great scrap busting technique and a wonderful block to use to make an easy table runner. \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners to quilting. You will need to be familiar with your machine and how to use it’s basic features such as winding and inserting the bobbin\, threading up your machine and needle\, changing the feet and needle and sewing a straight stitch. This session is not suitable for complete sewing machine beginners however\, you do not need to have any experience of quilting. You must have a 1/4″ foot or the ability to move your needle to the 1/4″ seam allowance. \nWhat do you need to bring for one sample block? \n\nSewing machine and neutral thread\n4 fat quarters in patterned or solid colours or scrap strips that are at least 3″ x 8″\nYou must have a 1/4″ foot or the ability to move your needle to the 1/4″ seam allowance\nFabric marking pen\nRuler\nRotary cutter\n\nRequired sewing knowledge/experience \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners to quilting.
