This is a 6 week workshop, with one session each week. If you cannot attend them all, please let us know and we will try and accommodate you as much as possible!
Always wanted to make an FPP quilt but didn’t know where to start? This friendly, hands-on 6-week course is the perfect introduction to FPP and quilting.
Using clever Moda Fabrics Cake Mix papers, you’ll learn how to create beautiful, accurate quilt blocks without complicated measuring or cutting. These pre-printed templates guide your stitching, making the process simple, relaxing, and surprisingly addictive!
Over six weeks, you’ll build your skills step-by-step in a supportive, social environment—perfect for beginners to FPP or anyone looking to refresh their sewing skills.
By the end of the course, you’ll have created your very own quilt top and gained the knowledge and confidence to finish your quilt at home.
Learn to make an FPP quilt with a Moda Cake Mix
Week 1 – Getting Started
Learn how Cake Mix papers work, how to pair fabrics, and sew your first blocks. You’ll leave with your first finished units and the confidence to keep going at home.
Week 2 – Building Your Blocks
Develop your accuracy and efficiency with chain piecing, trimming, and pressing techniques. We’ll help you refine your blocks and keep everything neat and consistent.
Week 3 – Layout & Design
Time to get creative! You’ll explore different layout options and learn how to arrange your blocks to create a balanced, eye-catching quilt design.
Week 4 – Constructing the Quilt Top
Sew your blocks into rows and learn how to match seams and points for a professional finish.
Week 5 – Finishing the Quilt Top
Bring everything together into a completed quilt top, with guidance on squaring up and preparing for the final stages.
Week 6 – Basting & Binding Basics
Learn how to create a quilt “sandwich” (top, batting, and backing), prepare binding, and attach it neatly with mitred corners—giving you all the skills needed to complete your quilt.

About our tutor
Helene is not only an all round fabulous person but also a fabulous quilter! She has many years of teaching little people in school and so has the patience of a saint, which makes teaching quilting to us adults a breeze! Helene loves quilting with a passion and can be found at her beloved Bernina sewing machine on an evening and weekend. She is part of the Yorkshire Modern Quilters group and enjoys experimenting with colour and pattern in her quilts, bags and other hand made items. Helene is very understanding of people’s individual needs and ways of learning so if you have any worries, concerns or questions about the workshops please just ask.
